Identify and discuss in class how children acquire concepts and knowledge. (P.O. 1) What is formal and informal assessment? (P.O.2). Text from “Math and Science for Children”, Section 1. Concepts, assessing, and planning.
Information and ideas will be presented by instructor for Math in Music and Movement, Art and other child-centered areas (P.O. 3)
Students will be required to show 2 weeks’ worth of planning showing how they will integrate their math activities into other areas of the curriculum (P.O. 3, 5). One math activity designed by the students will be required to be presented to the group with an explanation of what the children are learning and why (P.O.5). Planning homework, and presentation on Sep. 24.
Discussion of what is appropriate (or not) for our young children in Math activities (DAP) and ideas for teaching concepts of one-to-one correspondence, classifying, comparing, sorting and sequencing (P.O. 1, 5). Students will be required to show an understanding of 2 of these concepts and document the activities they do with their children, preferably in photographic form for the children’s use. On visiting the classroom, I will expect to see evidence of ongoing work on math concepts and integration into the planned curriculum. (Section 2 of our textbook will further understanding.) (P.O. 5) Homework due on Oct. 29.
Measurement and graphing (Section 3 of text book)..

There will be discussion in class and sharing by each students is expected (P.O. 3). Homework due on Oct. 29.
Shapes. Find a child-centered way for your children to learn about shapes, by singing, playing games, or other integrated activities (P.O. 3). Document 3 activities.
Students must also find a way to get parents involved in a math activity, involving shapes. Group will brainstorm on the possibilities (P.O. 4). Documentation due on Dec. 3.
